Pikes Peak or Bust: Planning Your Cog Railway Trip

May 10, 2026

What to know before riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railway from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit: season, reservations, altitude, and what to bring.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the highest cog railway in North America, and it leaves right from Manitou Springs. Here is how to plan the trip.

What it is. The railway climbs from the Ruxton Avenue depot in Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak. It has operated since 1891 and was completely rebuilt and reopened in 2021 with new trains and a new summit visitor center.

Reserve ahead. Tickets sell out, especially in summer and on weekends. Book online well in advance and arrive early. The depot sits at 515 Ruxton Avenue, a short walk or drive from downtown.

Dress for the summit. It can be sunny and mild in Manitou Springs and below freezing with wind at the top, in the same hour. Bring layers, a warm jacket, and a hat even in July. The round trip takes a little over three hours including time at the summit.

Respect the altitude. You gain roughly 7,500 feet from town to summit. Drink water, go easy, and know that some people feel the thin air at the top. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with your doctor first.

What to bring. Water, sunscreen, sunglasses, layers, a camera, and a small snack. The summit visitor center has food, including the famous high-altitude donuts.

Make a day of it. The depot is minutes from the mineral springs walk, downtown dining, and the Incline trailhead. Pair the railway with a morning in town for a full Manitou Springs day.
