A Day in Manitou Springs: Mineral Springs, the Incline, and Where to Eat

May 1, 2026

A simple, doable one-day plan for Manitou Springs: taste the mineral springs, climb (or skip) the Incline, and eat well downtown without rushing.

Manitou Springs packs a lot into a walkable downtown at the foot of Pikes Peak. Here is an honest one-day plan that works for first-time visitors.

Morning: the mineral springs walk. Start with the free, self-guided Manitou Mineral Springs Tour. Eight naturally carbonated public springs line Manitou and Ruxton Avenues, each with a different taste. Bring a bottle, fill it as you go, and let the walk pull you past the shops and historic buildings downtown.

Mid-morning: the Incline (or the easier version). The Manitou Incline is 2,744 steps and about 2,000 feet of gain in under a mile. It is a serious effort and requires a free timed reservation. If that is not your day, the lower Barr Trail gives you the same forest and views at your own pace. Either way, the trailhead sits at the top of Ruxton Avenue.

Lunch downtown. Come back hungry. Adam's Mountain Cafe has anchored the vegetarian-forward scene since 1985. For something heartier, Manitou Brewing Company pairs house beer with a full menu and a patio. Quick and casual works too: Sahara Cafe for Mediterranean, Manitou Thai and Ramen for a warm bowl.

Afternoon: pick one attraction. Cave of the Winds has run guided cave tours since 1881 and adds zip lines and cliffside rides. The Manitou Cliff Dwellings let you walk through authentic Ancestral Puebloan architecture. Miramont Castle is a four-story 1895 Victorian mansion with a tea room. Any one of them fills an afternoon.

Evening: dessert and a slow walk. Finish with frozen custard from Colorado Custard Company or fresh beignets from Rocky Mountain Beignets, then wander the shops on Manitou Avenue as the light goes gold on the peak.

Plan for it: most of downtown is walkable, parking fills up fast in summer, and the Incline reservation is the one thing worth booking ahead.
